YouTube is an American online video sharing and social media platform headquartered in San Bruno, California, United States. Accessible worldwide, it was launched on February 14, 2005, by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. It is owned by Google and is the second most visited website, after Google Search. YouTube has more than 2.5 billion monthly users, who collectively watch more than one billion hours of videos each day.
YouTube was initially created as a platform for anyone to post any video content they desired. It was hoped that users could use the site to upload, share, and view content without restriction. It has since grown to become one of the leading video distribution sites in the world.
YouTube was founded in February 2005 by three early PayPal employees. Since then, it has become the most popular free video-sharing platform in the world. YouTube’s business model is advertisement-based, making 15 million dollars per month before being purchased by Google.
In May 2007, YouTube launched its Partner’s Program to enable content creators to profit from the videos they create and upload. Many content creators can finally turn their hobbies into profitable careers.
According to company filings, press materials, traffic data, app downloads, and other data, YouTube’s global user base in 2021 is 2.24 billion. From 0.8 billion in 2012 to 2.6 billion in 2021, YouTube user growth has been tremendous in the last decade. A total of 1.8 billion new users were added to the YouTube user list.
