Hariyali Teej is an important Hindu festival which falls on the third day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Sawan, and Hartalika Teej falls on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada.
According to Drink Panchang, Hariyali Teej falls on August 19 this year. The Tritiya Tithi will start at 8:01 pm on August 18 and end at 10:19 pm on August 19. Meanwhile, Hartalika Teej is on September 18, and the morning shubh muhurat will last from 6:07 am to 8:34 am. The Tritiya Tithi will begin at 11:08 pm on August 17 and end at 12:39 pm on September 18.
There is often confusion between Hariyali Teej and Hartalika Teej because the rituals of the two festivals are quite similar. However, Hariyali Teej falls a month before Hartalika Teej. Hariyali Teej commemorates Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati's union. As per legend, it is the day when Lord Shiva accepted Maa Parvati as his consort after the goddess spent 107 births in penance. It was during her 108th birth that Devi Parvati could finally win him over and also came to be known as Teej Maata.
Meanwhile, Hartalika Teej marks the day when Devi Parvati's female friends abducted her and brought her into deep forests. They were trying to get her away from her father as he was hell-bent on getting her married to Lord Vishnu. Maa Parvati continued her penance in the forest and eventually married Lord Shiva.
Puja Muhurat for Hartalika Teej 2023:
Hartalika Teej Vrat has immense importance for Hindu women. It is believed that if an unmarried girl observes this fast religiously, she can get her soul mate, just as Goddess Parvati got Lord Shiva. The main objective of Hartalika Teej is to seek marital bliss along with progeny.
Hartalika means “abduction by a female friend”. According to the mythology, Goddess Parvati incarnated as Shailputri, who was the daughter of the Himalaya. On Narad’s suggestion, her father promised her hand in marriage to Lord Vishnu. But Parvati didn’t agree with her father’s decision so her friend took Parvati to a thick forest, so that her father would not marry her against her wish.
On the third day of the bright half of ’Bhadrapada, Goddess Parvati made a Shivalinga out of her hair and leaves. Impressed with her dedication, Lord Shiva gave his word to marry Parvati. Eventually, she was united with Lord Shiva and was married to him with her father’s blessing. Since then, the day is referred to as Haritalika Teej as Goddess Parvati’s female (aalika) friend had to abduct (harit) her in order for the Goddess to achieve her goal of marrying Lord Shiva.
Married women observed nirjala vrat in which they neither consume food nor drink water throughout the day. By fasting throughout the day, women seek the blessing for their husband, children, and own self. The devotees pray the statues of Shiva and Parvati for marital bliss to initiate the festival. Hartalika Teej comes a month after the celebration of Haryali Teej in India.
